Dear Lucie Stephens

Freedom of Information Act 2000 –Information Request ENQ-62843-J7P5C1

I refer to your request for information dated 05 September 2017.

The search for the information has been completed and I am pleased to
supply you with the following information:

1. the amount of money spent on asbestos management in schools between
2006 and 2016 (to include the costs of surveys, staff training and work to
enclose asbestos within schools)

The entirety of this information is not held centrally as schools operate
on wholly devolved budgets meaning they fund and manage much of the
building and maintenance projects that take place in schools directly,
therefore the associated costs of training, surveys and work for these
projects will be held by individual schools. However a central asbestos
resurveying and removal project (including where necessary sampling,
encapsulating, removal works etc) has been running since 2009 and the
spend on schools properties to the end of March 2017 was approximately
£2,871,500. To support schools in their duty to manage asbestos, training
is provided centrally free of charge to NCC schools.

2. the amount of money spent on asbestos removal from schools between 2006
and 2016

See answer to 1.

3. the amount of money spent on fines for breaches in the safe management
of asbestos in schools between 2006 and 2016

We have had no fines for breaches of safe management of asbestos between
2006 and 2016

4. funding sought from the Department of Education and the Education
Funding Authority for the management and removal of asbestos from schools
between 2006 and 2016

We have no record of applying to the DFE or EFA for separate funding for
management or removal of asbestos.

5. the amount of funding approved by the Department of Education and the
Education Funding Authority for the management and removal of asbestos
from schools between 2006 and 2016

We have no record of applying to the DFE or EFA for separate funding for
management or removal of asbestos.

.

6. the projected budget for future management of asbestos in schools
between 2017 and 2027

There is no single budget for overall management of asbestos as schools
operate on a devolved budget and therefore projected commitments cannot be
provided. However the ongoing removals programme described in 1. has
approximately £1,233,000 for future works remaining.
