Dear Lucie,

Thank you for your request for information regarding asbestos management in schools (reference number 02388); please see our response below. If you have any queries regarding your request for information then please don’t hesitate to contact us.

1. the amount of money spent on asbestos management in schools between 2006 and 2016 (to include the costs of surveys, staff training and work to enclose asbestos within schools) There has been circa £98k spent on asbestos surveys on the schools with an SLA with Capita. A large number of projects have had asbestos removal included within them but the figure has been within the overall tender figure so it is not possible to determine. However, from looking on Atrium to identify projects that specifically mention asbestos removal they amount to £183k. We do not hold the information for school staff training in relation to asbestos
2. the amount of money spent on asbestos removal from schools between 2006 and 2016 - Because asbestos is removed as part of building projects rather than as a specific individual job, we can’t give a figure as it is part of individual building contract tender figure.
3. the amount of money spent on fines for breaches in the safe management of asbestos in schools between 2006 and 2016 - NONE
4. funding sought from the Department of Education and the Education Funding Authority for the management and removal of asbestos from schools between 2006 and 2016 - Costs of funding asbestos management in each individual school is funded from their own individual budgets. No funding has been provided by the D of E or EFA for the removal of asbestos from schools
5. the amount of funding approved by the Department of Education and the Education Funding Authority for the management and removal of asbestos from schools between 2006 and 2016 6. the projected budget for future management of asbestos in schools between 2017 and 2027 - no funding has been applied for from the D of E or EFA. Future asbestos management costs within schools, are the responsibility of their own individual school budgets, rather than a central fund.
