FOI Officer, Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council

Dear Ms Stephens,

I am writing in response to your request for information (ref FOI 44558).

The relevant Council Service(s) has searched for the requested information
and our response is as follows.

Please note that Carillion (our property partners) can only provide the
data from February 2014 onwards and do not have access to the records
before this date. Additionally individual schools may have undertaken work
themselves so would need to be contacted directly.

1.       the amount of money spent on asbestos management in schools
between 2006 and 2016 (to include the costs of surveys, staff training and
work to enclose asbestos within schools)

£18,700.00 was spent on asbestos surveys to facilitate central led capital
schemes between February 2014 and December 2016.

2.       the amount of money spent on asbestos removal from schools
between 2006 and 2016

£437,700.00 was spent on asbestos removal works to facilitate central led
capital schemes between February 2014 and December 2016.

3.       the amount of money spent on fines for breaches in the safe
management of asbestos in schools between 2006 and 2016

As far as we are aware there has been no prosecution for breaches of the
Management of Asbestos and therefore no fines.

4.       funding sought from the Department of Education and the Education
Funding Authority for the management and removal of asbestos from schools
between 2006 and 2016

No funding sought.

5.       the amount of funding approved by the Department of Education and
the Education Funding Authority for the management and removal of asbestos
from schools between 2006 and 2016

No funding approved.

6.       the projected budget for future management of asbestos in schools
between 2017 and 2027

There is no specified budget held centrally for the management of asbestos
in schools. The local authority delegates all revenue funding for repairs
and maintenance to schools as part of the School Budget Share. Schools
therefore retain responsibility for all revenue repairs and maintenance
including asbestos management. The local authority will spend funding on
asbestos management when it forms part of a capital project which has been
identified as a priority within the Services to People's Directorate
capital programme.
