Cost of litter bins and budget

The request was successful.

Dear Wirral Metropolitan Borough Council,

On 16th June, the Wirral Globe reported that six solar powered litter bins had been installed in West Kirby. Can you please confirm:

1. The unit cost to the council for each bin, including installation and any commuted sum for maintenance?

2. The unit cost for non-solar powered, standard issue litter bins, including installation and any commuted sum for maintenance?

3. How many litter bins the council owns (and require Biffa to empty) across the Borough and how many of these have been identified as being in poor condition and in need of replacement?

Thanks

Yours faithfully,

Ian Lewis

Dear Councillor Lewis

In response to your recent information enquiry regarding solar compaction
litter bins, we can advise as follows:

1. The unit cost to the council for each bin, including installation and
any commuted sum for maintenance?

Unit cost is £95.00 per month on rental agreement, including 12 month
software package and maintenance.

Delivery was £70 per unit and each bin wrapped cost an additional £200.
No installation fee was required from the supplier.  Highway works team
supplied installation at £106.05 per bin.

2. The unit cost for non-solar powered, standard issue litter bins,
including installation and any commuted sum for maintenance?

Standard Litter bin from contracted supplier Broxhap - single bin -
£259.99 + £106.05 for installation / Double bin - £397.55 + £106.05 for
installation.

Each bin comes with a 12 month warranty with an additional 2 year parts
and labour guarantee.  With a 12 year anti perforation warranty on all
bins commissioned and an End of Life take back recycling scheme on the
manufacturers supplied bins.  Maintenance is carried out by the Council’s
in house bin repair operative.

3. How many litter bins the council owns (and require Biffa to empty)
across the Borough and how many of these have been identified as being in
poor condition and in need of replacement?

The Council currently has in excess of 4500 on street bins in service
throughout the borough.  At present there is a data file of approximately
163 litter bins requiring either replacement or removal with some
referrals for new installlation.  Litter bins reported as in poor
condition is an ongoing process and captured on the data file for
reference.  Data file available on request which details size, condition
and requested action and since 2021, recent outcome of assessment
monitoring.

We trust this answers your enquiry.

Yours sincerely
