Dear Mr Bush
Further to your request under section 1(1) of the Freedom of Information Act 2000, the response from The University of Manchester is detailed below:
1. Cost/predicted cost/working estimate for the cost of the iPad pilot being run in the life sciences faculty.
The iPad pilot scheme is being run in the Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences, not the Faculty of Life Sciences.
The cost of providing iPads to those students taking part in the pilot scheme is £270,031. Some additional costs associated with the project are envisaged, such as e-learning software and app development. These technical requirements of the scheme are currently being considered and will continue to be assessed as part of the ongoing pilot project.
2. Details of any external funding or grant related to this pilot.
None
3. What is being cut to offset this cost - i.e. where is the money coming from.
The pilot project is being paid for by the Medical and Dental Schools through additional investment.
4. Details of iPad models and price per unit.
460 x 16Gb WiFi iPads @ £322.52
265 x 16Gb WiFi+3G iPads @ £459.14
Prices exclude VAT in the expectation that the iPads will fall to be zero rated under Group 15, item 5 of the zero-rate Schedule of the VAT Act 1994. The 3G model unit price includes Apple Care.

Dear Ms Clare,
Thank you for that information. Please can you be more specific with regard to point 3? Where is the additional investment coming from?
Thank you very much for your attention to this matter.
Yours sincerely,
Charlie Bush

Dear Mr Bush
Further to your additional question after we provided a response to your
Freedom of Information request, please see the response I have received
from our Communications Office.
Please can you be more specific with regard to point 3? Where is the
additional investment coming from?
The University of Manchester, through savings and efficiencies, currently
has a surplus of £40 million, which it is reinvesting through a number of
initiatives aimed at improving the learning experience of its 40,000
undergraduate and postgraduate students. The iPad pilot scheme is just one
such initiative. Others, just announced, include a £20 million strategic
investment to appoint more than 100 academic staff across a wide range of
disciplines, and a £2.5 million investment in a new doctoral scholarship
scheme aimed at supporting 100 new PhD students across any discipline.

Hi
Really nice request for information! Have you thought about rephrasing your question regarding point 3 to something like 'Have public funds been used for the purchase of these items?' and 'What was the source of these funds?'
