cost of EEA family permits

UK Border Agency did not have the information requested.

TieKey Accounts

Dear UK Border Agency,

I refer to the Damian Green's document entitled "Charging for Immigration and Nationality Services 2012-13", where Mr Green remarks: "we believe it is right that we continue to
seek to reduce the burden on UK taxpayers of delivering the border and immigration system by asking migrants to make a greater contribution to the funding of the UK Border Agency.". This document can be found on the UKBA website at http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/siteco.... This helpfully includes Unit Costs for each visa etc.

I understand that European Law does not allow for charging for Residence Permits for EEA family permits, or EEA residence cards. However, please, under the FOI act, provide Unit Costs for all types of EEA family permits/residence cards, both those issued outside the UK (VAF5 or online equivalent), or those issued inside the UK (EEA1/2/3/4 and BR1/2/3/4/5/6). Please also confirm how many of each type were issued in the last 12 months (or the last 12 months for which information is held).

Yours faithfully,

Mr Ian Gold

The fee they charge is zero.

It is hard to imagine that they have no estimate of the unit cost or overall annual cost of issuing EEA Family Permits.

Maybe ask for an internal review?!!!

Dear UK Border Agency,

Please pass this on to the person who conducts Freedom of Information reviews.

I am writing to request an internal review of UK Border Agency's handling of my FOI request 'cost of EEA family permits'.

Whilst I understand that no fee is charged for these applications, I also requested the cost to the UKBA of issuing them.

Please confirm how much these cost the UKBA, or confirm that UKBA has no information on the cost to UKBA (and by extension to the UK taxpayer) of issuing these visas/residence cards etc. I understand that the UKBA has full information of the cost of issuing chargeable visas/residence cards, i.e. a UK citizen wishes to apply for ILR for his non-EU spouse has to pay £991, which costs UKBA £255 i.e. a profit to UKBA of nearly 400%. A EU citizen (who may never have lived in the EU) wishes to bring his non-EU spouse to the UK pays nothing for a service which costs the UKBA £xxx. Please let me know the cost to the taxpayer of subsidising EU residence cards for non-EU spouses of EU citizens.

It would greatly suprise me if the UKBA does not have this information.

A full history of my FOI request and all correspondence is available on the Internet at this address:

Yours faithfully,

Mr I Gold
