I can confirm that the Museum holds information on the costs of the
contracts queried. However, this information is considered to be exempt
under Section 43 (2) (commercial interests) of the Freedom of Information
Act and is therefore being withheld.

Disclosure of this financial information is considered to be likely to
prejudice the commercial interests of the Natural History Museum for the
following reasons:

•Detailed information on Museum’s individual commercial agreements and
budgets affects the Museum’s competitiveness in the market and reduces the
Museum’s bargaining power with certain clients.

•Some of the Museum’s business activities are built around relationships
with a single external partner or service provider with whom the Museum
has confidentiality clauses within the contracts. Providing detailed
accounts breaches confidentiality with these third parties as it
effectively exposes the Museum’s commercial terms.

•The Museum may jeopardise repeat business if Museum suppliers learn that
financial information is being shared externally – regardless of any
confidentiality terms.

The public interest test has been applied and supports the withholding of
the information. If the disclosure of the information were to affect the
Museum's relationship with its current and potential suppliers and
partners, the loss of potential savings which accrue to the Museum might
well affect the ability of the Museum to carry out its public tasks. The
Museum cannot afford to jeopardise its negotiating position with suppliers
which could entail higher costs that would impact the whole Museum. The
public interest in the Museum being able to secure good value contracts
and thus saving taxpayers’ money which can be spent on continuing to
provide a high quality public offer, education facilities and a
world-class scientific research institute is considered to outweigh the
interest in disclosure.

I trust that this information answers your enquiry. If, however, you are
dissatisfied with the handling of your request, you have the right to ask
for an internal review. Internal review requests should be submitted
within two months of the date of receipt of this response to your original
email and should be addressed to me. If you are dissatisfied with the
outcome or the conduct of the Museum’s internal review, you may seek an
independent review from the Information Commissioner. You can report your
concern via the ICO website at [1]https://ico.org.uk/concerns or call
their helpline 0303 123 1113.

Yours sincerely,

Ruth Benny
