Convictions and prosecutions for illegal fox hunting

Pip Donovan made this Freedom of Information request to Ministry of Justice

Automatic anti-spam measures are in place for this older request. Please let us know if a further response is expected or if you are having trouble responding.

The request was partially successful.

Dear Ministry of Justice,

My questions relate to the Hunting Act 2004.

1. How many prosecutions have been made under the Hunting Act in the English and Welsh courts in the calendar years 2005 to 2020?

2. How many convictions have been made under the Hunting Act for the same period and in the same place?

3. Out of those convictions, how many of them were for illegal hunting of a fox?

Thank you.

Yours faithfully,

Pip Donovan

Dear Giovanni Barbuti

Thank you for your reply to my FOI request.

You say it would cost too much to provide the information I’ve requested. I’d like to reduce the parameters of this request and change the dates to 2018 - 2020.

So my FOI now reads:
My questions relate to the Hunting Act 2004.

1. How many prosecutions have been made under the Hunting Act in the English and Welsh courts in the calendar years 2018 to 2020?

2. How many convictions have been made under the Hunting Act for the same period and in the same place?

3. Out of those convictions, how many of them were for illegal hunting of a fox?

Yours sincerely,

Pip Donovan

Dear Statistics,

Thank you for your response to my FOI. However, I cannot access the drop down list to the offences by type. The error message says my version of Excel does not support the request. I am using version 16.48 for Mac. I am guessing that the MoJ uses a different one and this is why the drop down list doesn't appear as you'd expect. Can you tell me which version the MoJ uses? Or alternatively suggest a different way of accessing the same information.

Thank you.

Yours sincerely,

Pip Donovan

Dear Sir/Madam

I am sorry to hear about your problems with accessing the links contained in the response to your enquiry. An alternative source can be found in the csvs further down the link you were provided with. Open 'Data behind interactive tools - 2 (csv)' and then open the csv called 'HO-code-principal-offence'. Select the offences listed in our response from the column in that too, and the years from that column.

I hope this is sufficient to allow you to extract the requested information.
