Consultation response Managing radioactive substances and nuclear decommissioning

The request was successful.

Dear Nuclear Decommissioning Authority,

Consultation response Managing radioactive substances and nuclear decommissioning is currently open.

In part two it states that it is expected that near surface disposal of nuclear waste will take place on pre existing NDA owned land.

Will the long term lease, mineral rights and freehold land recently purchased that surrounds the pre existing llwr site be included in that statement?

As the llwr site has carried out boreholes last year with the view to hosting near surface disposal but this consultation is u.k wide, and regards the statement in part two of the documents, which other NDA owned sites have had boreholes carried out with near surface disposal of nuclear waste in mind?

Yours faithfully,
Sadie Clarke

Dear Ms Clarke

NDA owned land that is a current nuclear licensed site or adjacent / surrounding the current nuclear licensed sites is included in this statement. The NWS active exploration activities for the possibility of NSD are focused within the current LLWR nuclear licensed site.

The LLWR site is the UK's national LLW disposal facility. As such, it is critical national infrastructure and understanding the characteristics and properties of the site in detail is essential to the safe and secure operations of the site. The site team are currently undertaking a major review of their Environmental Safety Case. This is a complex, multi-year programme and physical works have been undertaken to support this review. The boreholes were part of these physical works. They provided valuable information for the review and also supported the commitment made in NDA Strategy 4 to 'actively explore the disposal of ILW in the LLWR'. The strategy was published in March 2021 (link provided below), after full public consultation in 2020.

https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk...

No boreholes in support of near surface disposal (NSD) have been carried out on any other NDA owned land, as NSD of ILW in England and Wales is not current government policy and new policy proposals are currently being consulted on. Therefore we have no plans to widen our borehole investigation coverage for NSD and any further investigations will be dependent on the outcome of the policy consultation.

Dear Enquiries,

Please clarify.

You are saying that the land currently outside the llwr site, that was purchased as Mineral rights, long term lease and freehold, are included in the policy for ILW. Near surface disposal?

And if so and the policy is approved could be developed?

Yours sincerely,

Sadie Clarke
