Constraints on the use of speed cameras
Dear Department for Transport,
For many years now, my local authority has stated that it cannot deploy speed cameras unless it fulfils conditions imposed by the DfT. However in your response to FoI request F0012674 you have stated that this is not in fact the case and that full control with the LA.
In passing this information on to my LA they have contested your statement and pointed out in one of your publications for fixed camera sites you state that they must have “at least 3 KSI collisions per km in the baseline period” which means cameras cannot be used on a preventative basis as you have to kill/injure a person first.
You can’t both be right, so please clarify.
Yours faithfully,
Rose Cullingford
