Conditional access

Mr Hillas made this Freedom of Information request to British Broadcasting Corporation

This request has been closed to new correspondence from the public body. Contact us if you think it ought be re-opened.

The request was partially successful.

Dear British Broadcasting Corporation,

On Wednesday, 8 October 2014, as Chairman of Media Select Committee, the current Secretary of State for Culture Media and Sport, John Whittingdale said:

"You may remember that Freeview was originally a project which ITV created, and was in desperate trouble, and was bailed out by the BBC, and Greg Dyke was quite open that the condition of bailing out Freeview was that the set top boxes should not have conditional access systems in them, and that was because the BBCknew that if every household in the country had a conditional access system in that set top box it made it very easy to move over to a subscription basis for paying for the BBC . . . . "

This is a request lodged under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 for full disclosure and publication of all the information held by the BBC in regard to former BBC Director General, Greg Dyke's decision "that the set top boxes should not have conditional access systems in them"

Yours faithfully,

Mr Hillas
