Computer storage ... colour printing facilities? (Joanne Asher Newcastle Upon Tyne)

The request was successful.

Dear Newcastle University,

Could you please provide me with the following information?

1) How much computer storage space do you give your:-
a) Students
b) Staff

2) How do you back up your student and staff data? To Disk or tape? How long do you keep those back-ups?

3) Do all students have access to colour printing facilities?

4) Do students get charged for printing? If so, how much are they charged and do they get any free credits?

5) Do you provide wireless access for your students? If so, what controls do you have in place for safeguarding internet access when they use their own devices on your network.

6) Do you provide remote access to students and staff home
directories and other University resources? If so, which technologies are used to achieve this?

7) What e-mail systems are used to provide e-mail to your staff and students. What amount of storage space are they provided with?

8) What is the University stance on students and staff using BYOD?

Yours faithfully,

Joanne Asher (Newcastle Upon Tyne)

Dear Joanne,

Thank you for your request for information received on 22 August 2012. We're dealing with it under the Freedom of Information Act and will get back to you within 20 working days of receipt.

Can I just double check something in question 8 - by 'BYOD' do you mean 'bring your own device', i.e. staff or students bringing in their own devices to use?

5) Details can be found on our website: http://www.ncl.ac.uk/itservice/connect/o...

6) Details can be found on our website: http://www.ncl.ac.uk/itservice/software/...

7) Details can be found on our website: http://www.ncl.ac.uk/itservice/email/

8) I emailed you on 30 August asking if you could clarify this question, but I have not received a reply. It is still not entirely clear what you are asking - it is unlikely that we'd have recorded information that specifically states our 'stance' on use of certain technology, but our stance may be inferred from information as to whether or not such use is allowed. Could you be a little clearer about what you are looking for?

If you are unhappy with the way we have handled your request you can ask for an internal review.
Details of how to do this can be found at:
http://www.ncl.ac.uk/foi/access/complain...

If you are not happy with the outcome of the internal review, you then have the right to apply directly to the Information Commissioner for a decision.
