Thank you for your recent Freedom of Information request. Please find
below the College's response to your questions.

I am making an FOI request for undergraduate Computer Science course(s).
For students who received a STEP offer, how many fail to achieve the STEP
offer and are still admitted.  I would like to know this for the past 3
years, (4 if possible)

The information you have requested is attached. Please note the following:

1. Numbers of 5 or fewer have been replaced with an asterisk.

Information is exempt from disclosure under the Freedom of Information
Act, Section 40(2), if it is personal data and releasing the information
would breach one of the data protection principles contained in the Data
Protection Act 2018/General Data Protection Regulations.

Statistical information can amount to personal information if it would be
possible to identify the individual from that information or from that
information and other information that may be available to the recipient
of the information. Where small numbers are involved, the possibility that
the receiver might be able to link the information to an individual is
increased.

The GDPR principle (a) requires us to be lawful and fair in the way we
handle a person’s information. Disclosure to the public would contravene
GDPR principle (a) because there is no lawful basis for processing the
information for that purpose. When assessing fairness, we have to take
into account what the individual’s expectations are about how we might use
their personal information and also any public interest that there might
be in disclosure of the information. Our students would not expect this
information to be made available to the public. We are not aware of any
objective public interest arguments in favour of disclosure. This is a
refusal notice in relation to the personal information aspect of your
request, as required by the Freedom of Information Act.

2. Last year the STEP 1 paper was cancelled and as such many students were
unable to take it to meet their offer conditions. This accounts for the
higher number of students accepted despite not meeting their offer
condition in the 2020 academic cycle.

If you are unhappy with the way that we have handled your request, you can
ask us to conduct a review. Please make your representation in writing
within 40 days of the date you received this response. If you remain
dissatisfied with how Imperial College has handled your request you may
then approach the Information Commissioner’s Office.
