Computer Science 2024 statistics for undergraduates for Imperial College London

Avon Alexander made this Freedom of Information request to Imperial College London Automatic anti-spam measures are in place for this older request. Please let us know if a further response is expected or if you are having trouble responding.

The request was partially successful.

Dear Imperial College London,

I am seeking statistics regarding applicants for the undergraduate Computer Science program at Imperial College London for the year 2024.

For the applicants who received an interview, I would like the following data:
1. The A Level subjects and grades, including any AS Levels, of each applicant. Declare if these scores were predicted or not. For applicants who did not undertake A Levels, please provide their International Baccalaureate (IB) scores or state the qualification they took.
2. TMUA scores of each applicant.
3. Confirmation of whether each applicant received an offer.

I would also like the number of total applicants who:
1. Applied for that year
2. Was shortlisted
3. Took 4 A levels
4. Were predicted/achieved: (A* A* A*) (A* A* A) (A* A* A* A*) (A* A A A or A* A* A A or A* A* A* A)
5. Applied with A Level Further Maths
6. Applied with AS Level Further Maths

Under Section 11 of the FOIA, I would like to have the data requested above as a spreadsheet file if possible.

Yours faithfully,
Avon Alexander

IMPFOI, Imperial College London

The published information can be accessed at the transparency pages of our website: http://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/ug/apply... (scroll to the bottom of the page to the link “Download the Undergraduate Admission Statistics”). Information is exempt from the Freedom of Information Act (Section 21) if it is already reasonably accessible to the requester. The figures are updated annually. Information that is intended for future publication is exempt from the Freedom of Information Act by virtue of Section 22 of the Act.

Imperial is not able to extract details of the A Levels subjects that applicants are studying or details of their predicted grades from our admissions database. The Freedom of Information Act created a right to access information to enable scrutiny of public authorities in the public interest. Section 14(1) of the Act aims to protect public authorities by allowing them to refuse any requests which have the potential to cause a disproportionate or unjustified level of disruption and are therefore deemed vexatious. While we appreciate that your request was made in good faith and was not intended to cause disruption, we are entitled to consider whether a request has a value or serious purpose in terms of the objective public interest in the information sought and to weigh that against the burden that would be placed on the organisation by having to produce that information. The public interest being the public good, not what is of interest to groups of or individual members of the public. Imperial’s view is that any legitimate public interest in admissions figures to our undergraduate programmes is met by the information already in the public domain set out above and in the detailed information for applicants also on our website. We are therefore refusing the elements of your request not covered by the published information in reliance on Section 14 of the Act.

Yours,

Freedom of Information Team
Imperial College London
