Complaints about political bias (all parties) 2014-2017

Myles Cook made this Freedom of Information request to British Broadcasting Corporation

This request has been closed to new correspondence from the public body. Contact us if you think it ought be re-opened.

We're waiting for Myles Cook to read recent responses and update the status.

Dear British Broadcasting Corporation,

Please could I have the number of complaints of political bias (all parties) from 2014 to the present day? I would be interested to have the figures broken down into year and the party for which the bias was shown according to the complaint.

If the complaints were logged through electronic means (e-mail, etc.), I would like subject/summary lines to be included.

I have already had one such request turned down with the following paragraph: "The limited application of the Act to public service broadcasters was to protect freedom of expression and the rights of the media under Article 10 European Convention on Human Rights ("ECHR"). The BBC, as a media organisation, is under a duty to impart information and ideas on all matters of public interest and the importance of this function has been recognised by the European Court of Human Rights. Maintaining our editorial independence is a crucial factor in enabling the media to fulfil this function."

However, this is a request for an article I am writing for my blog which is in the public interest and does not require the BBC to give specifics which would disclose either the complainant or the subject of the complaint. It is also a request on a matter that calls into doubt the BBC's "editorial independence" and by not fulfilling the request you are, by definition, breaking Article 10 of the ECHR by removing my rights to protection of freedom of expression as a member of the wider community of media outlets (which include community journalists as recognised by the UK Government) and the rights of media (again, community journalists are recognised and given rights by the UK Government including equal access to local government meetings, etc.).

I look forward to your prompt response.

Yours faithfully,

Myles Cook
