Dear Mr Longden,

I write in response to your request for information under the Freedom of
Information Act 2000 ("the FOIA"). Your request was received on 28
September 2015 and was made in the following terms:
"I would like to request information about the annual number of complaints
made against unions by their members over the last 5 years, and if this
can be broken down by union and type of complaint."
I attach an excel spreadsheet that provides a breakdown of the number of
complaints received by the Certification Officer each financial year going
back to 2010-2011. You will see that the record for each financial year
provides a further breakdown of the complaints by trade union and
jurisdiction.

The Certification Officer's website contains a record of the decisions
issued by the Certification Officer:
[1]https://www.gov.uk/government/organisati....
Decisions are organised by jurisdiction and are listed in chronological
order. The website details the trade unions against which the complaints
were made.

The Certification Officer also submits to the Chair of Acas and the
Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills an annual report in
which he sets out his activities and provides details of his decisions.
These annual reports, going back to 1999-2000, can be accessed from the
Certification Officer's website:
[2]https://www.gov.uk/government/collection....

If you consider that your request for information has not been dealt with
in accordance with the FOIA, you have the right to request that this
response be reviewed by Gerard Walker, Assistant Certification Officer,
who has overall responsibility for the Certification Office's compliance
with the FOIA. Such an appeal needs to be made within two calendar months
of the date of this letter and should be made in writing to the
Certification Office or can be emailed to: [3][Certification Office request email].
If, following this review, you still consider that your request for
information has not been dealt with in accordance with the FOIA, you may
ask the Information Commissioner to carry out a further review. The
Information Commissioner's address is: Wycliffe House, Water Lane,
Wilmslow, Cheshire, SK9 5AF.
Yours sincerely,

Naveed Rafiq
Operations Manager
