Dear British Broadcasting Corporation,

I have today attempted to contact the data protection officer for the BBC to address the apparent illegality of your new registration process before members of the public can access the BBC IPlayer functions, in my case for Radio.

It appears from the associated information that the BBC is requiring personal information regarding users simply to personalise the content and record a users preferences, and having duly obtained this information, you allegedly allow the user to Opt Out of your personalisation programme whilst keeping the personal information which is no longer required.

I believe this is a gross breach of the DPA and wished to discuss the matter with your DP Officer.

Unfortunately the BBC Switchboard staff on 0208 seven 43 eight 000 were unable to connect me with the Data protection officer or their department because they can only connect members of the public to Named Individuals.

As a result I asked to be connected with the BBC HR department, on the assumption that the HR department could identify the name of the individual and or any other individual in your Data Protection department.

Unfortunately I was informed by that operator that he was unable to supply any names of any staff to me due to "DATA PROTECTION" as the BBC considers the names of individuals to be personal within the meaning of the DPA.

With these facts already established I am requesting a full disclosure of the names of all BBC Staff and their position or job title, their employment location within the UK by department and building address and postcode, and their telephone contact number and email address.

This request is only for their details of employment and in no way should include any personal or private information not associated with their employment.

If you respond by stating that this information ius exempt under section 40, or indeed any other portion of the DPA, then please provide any document or policy within the BBC which gives you the authority to compel this private information from members of the public for "Personalisation" which you state the public can Opt Out Of after registration, and more tellingly, why there is no opt out before registration?

Oh and a question which occurs from a previous response from your organisation, please specify if possible, how many staff employed by the BBC have a salary of less than £25 per hour, and how many more than £25 per hour.
If possible please provide a breakdown of salary levels by rank or grade for the BBC on a paid by hour basis.

Yours faithfully,

W Hunter
