Dear Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency,
Hi, I left the uk end of 1973 to work in South Africa, to obtain a drivers licence there, I had to send it to Pretoria and they sent me a SA licence back. But not my UK licence.
On my return to the uk last year, I sent my SA licence to you and received back a uk one. On applying for a job, I was told that I needed a D1 code on my licence. I see that as my licence was issued in the late seventies I should be entitled to the D1.
Please could you advise
.

Yours faithfully,

Trevor Holroyd

DVLA Contact Centre, Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency

Dear Trevor Holroyd,

Thank you for your enquiry received on 19/3/2018.
Your case reference number is 00523837.

Thank you for confirming the requested information.

Driving licence holders who passed their car test before 1 January 1997
normally have higher entitlements (namely, C1 and D1). However, these
entitlements end when the licence holder reaches the age of 70 years.

If you wish to keep these higher entitlements we recommend that you check
with your doctor to make sure you can meet the higher medical standards
for driving these vehicles.

You will need to complete a D2 application form and a D4 medical report.

These can be ordered [1]here. Alternatively, you can get them from
selected [2]Post Offices® that offer driving licence transactions.

You can also download a D4 form [3]online.

Who can complete the D4?
The D4 has to be completed by a doctor and you should ensure that all the
relevant questions are completed.

Remember:

* To enclose your driving licence with your application

* No fee is required

* You don’t need to send ID unless you’ve had a change in your name
since the last licence was issued. For information on what ID to send
and how this will be returned, please see the advice [4]here

Where should I send my application?
DVLA
Swansea
SA99 1TU

How long will it take?
Please allow up to 3 weeks for your updated licence to be sent to
you. This can take longer if we need to check your health or personal
details.

Do not reply to this email. If you wish to contact us again about this
response then please use our [5]reply form link or copy and paste the
