Cleansing responsibility roundabouts etc

Peter Silverman made this Freedom of Information request to Highways England Company Limited

This request has been closed to new correspondence from the public body. Contact us if you think it ought be re-opened.

The request was successful.

Dear Highways England Company Limited,

I am aware of your responsibilities under S89(1) and (2) of the Environmental Protection Act to keep the motorways and certain trunk roads (APTRs) on your network clear of litters and clean etc.

I am also aware that for motorway junctions your responsibility normally ceases at the white line at the end / beginning of the slip road and that the relevant local authority is responsible for cleaning the roundabout.

However I know that this does not apply to the Denham roundabout (J1 of the M40) and, I am told, to J3 of the M5, where you have responsibility for cleansing the roundabouts.

1. Can you please provide me with a list of any other motorway or APTR junctions where you are also are responsible for cleansing part or all of the roundabouts.

2. Can you also provide me with maps etc showing the demarcation lines in each case. Not knowing how many junctions are involved and how accessible this information is I would be happy to consider modifying this part of my request in any way that would make the task less onerous for you.

Yours faithfully,

Peter Silverman
