Clarification requested as to who initially formally receives and records complaints against police

The request was partially successful.

Dear Northamptonshire Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner,

It has been brought to our attention that inconsistent advice is being given to citizens who wish to make a complaint against the police.

Police officers are advising citizens to call 101 or the Professional Standards Department and others are being informed to make the initial complaint to your office (police and crime commissioner).

1. Please provide information as to the correct procedure in Northamptonshire and who deals with the initial complaint.

2. What should happen if a complaint is made directly to the following persons:

a) member of police staff

b) police officer

c) 101

d) Online via the police website

d) The Professional Standards department

e) The OPFCC

Yours faithfully,

NPMG

Commissioner, Northamptonshire Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner

Thank you for taking the time to contact me. Although I receive a large
number of correspondence daily, I will endeavour to respond to your
message as soon as possible.

My role as Commissioner is to be the voice of the public regarding
policing, crime and fire services. It is however important for you to be
aware what I cannot assist with and I would encourage you to review
[1]http://www.northantspfcc.org.uk/about/ab... for further
information. If I am unable to take your concerns further please be
assured I will directly raise them with the relevant authority where
appropriate. Unfortunately this does includes petitions which I do not
sign but will forward on if appropriate.

If you live in Northamptonshire I respectfully ask that you provide your
full postal address including the postcode. As you will appreciate,
protocol dictates that I can only assist constituents of Northamptonshire
with casework related enquires.

If you have sent me an invitation to an event, this will be sent to my
Personal Assistant who will deal with this on my behalf.

Yours sincerely

Stephen Mold

Dear Northamptonshire Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner,

We appear to have missed out another important person who is a PCSO if this could be added to the list please as someone who may initially receive a complaint from a member of the public.

Yours faithfully,

NPMG
