Dear Ms Moore,
Thank you for your email dated 17 May 2012 regarding statistics on
children looked after in England. You have requested information on
children entering the care system since 2006.
I have dealt with your request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000.
The number of children who started to be looked after in England during
the years ending 31 March 2007 to 2011 is given in the table below:
Year Number ^1,2,3
2007 23,960
2008 23,250
2009 25,700
2010 28,090
2011 27,310
Source: SSDA903
1. Figures are rounded to the nearest 10.
2. Only the first occasion on which a child started to be looked after in
the year has been counted.
3. Figures exclude children looked after under an agreed series of short
term placements.
This information is published as part of the Statistical First Release,
‘Children Looked After by Local Authorities in England (including adoption
and care leavers) - year ending 31 March 2011’. The Statistical First
Release can be found at:

I think this is just British children , I am waiting on another certain borough council regarding foreign nationals , but they are very overdue now. I shall be reminding them of course.
