Child Population UK over various Census periods

The request was successful.

Dear Office for National Statistics,

I am undertaking an article on the child population and proportion to total population for my charity's web journal.

Can you give me for the following Census years the total child population under 16, and the proportion to total UK population for:

1911, 1921, 1931, 1941 (or nearest), 1951, 1961, 1971, 1981, 1991, 2001

I have tried for the earlier years and got nowhere. Nor am I sure for the later years from 1971.

Thank you.

Yours faithfully,

Jan Cosgrove Mr

Paul Wearn, Office for National Statistics

Thank you for your email of 8 November 2010 requesting information about
child population statistics. I am writing to confirm that the Office for
National Statistics has now completed its search for the information which
you requested and a copy of the information is enclosed.
Please find attached the following spreadsheet, detailing the single years
of age for E&W, extracted from the 1911 to 2001 Census volumes:

This spreadsheet provides the total E&W population figures, whilst
allowing the customer to calculate the total child population for the
'under 16s'.

As a census was not carried out in 1941 due to the 2nd World War, I have
provided an extract from the 1939 National Register, detailing Table II,
'Population by Sex, Year of Birth, (and age) and Marital Condition'

We only supply data for England and Wales therefore for the remainder of
the UK you will need to contact GRO(S) (Scotland) and NISRA (Northern
