Child Abuse and Exploitation
Dear West Yorkshire Police,
Please advise over the past 5 years (year endings to suit your
convenience) how many Reports you have had of young people (divided
into males and females) aged 12-16 years :
a) Missing from home for more than 24 hours
b) Missing from Local Authority Care for more than 24 hours
and
c) how many in each category were deemed to be at risk of child
abuse and specifically of child sexual abuse / exploitation.
Please segregate the figures in line with different Local
Authorities which you cover.
Yours faithfully,
Philip J Measures
Dear Mr Measures
Thank you for your request for information from West Yorkshire Police.
Please could we clarify:
For parts a & b:
We can provide the number of misper occurrences for 12 - 16yr olds, broken down by district, gender and whether missing from home or Local Authority care. However, we are unable to identify those missing for more than 24hrs as the date/time from/to periods are not recorded.
Also this data would be the number of occurrences, not number of individuals (i.e. the same person could go missing multiple times during the period).
For part c:
We do not have a 'child abuse' flag but we can identify misper occurrences flagged at risk of CSE. Again, as with the above questions, we are unable to identify those missing for more than 24hrs and the figures would represent the number of occurrences, not individuals.
There is also the possibility of this question attracting exemption under the Freedom of Information Act 2000.
Please note that Police forces do not use identical computer systems to capture data therefore the above cannot be used for comparison purposes with other Police Forces.
Please could you advise if you wish to proceed with the sections we are able to provide?
Kind regards
Disclosure Unit

The legal time limit for your response has long expired and I now need to know whether to make a formal complaint to the Information Commissioner.

I commend West Yorkshire Police who seem to be one of few Police Authorities recording this information and which shows an upward trend.
