Chesterton Medical Centre, Cambridge - Ambulence Calls in 2016

The request was successful.

Dear East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust,

Could you please release the number of patients urgently transferred from the out-of-hours GP service at Chesterton Medical Centre, Union Lane, Cambridge to hospital by ambulance during 2016.

If it is easier to provide the number of times an ambulance was called to Chesterton Medical Centre, Union Lane, Cambridge in 2016 that statistic would also satisfy my request.

Before taking the decision to close the out-of-hours base in Chesterton, Cambridge, the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Clinical Commissioning Group was told:

"On rare occasions (5%) patients attending OOH bases need urgent transfer to their local hospital due to a deterioration of symptoms associated with their presenting condition. Currently this would require a blue light ambulance/Medivac to CUHFT from Chesterton Medical Centre."
https://www.cambridgeshireandpeterboroug...

The CCG was also told that out of hours consultations at Chesterton Medical Centre took place at a rate of 13,290 per year.

The purpose of this request is to find out if ambulances really were being called to the out-of-hours base at the rate claimed.

The response indicates that just 1% of attendees of the out-of-hours GP service at Chesterton Medical Centre required an ambulance to attend and take them to hospital. (133 out of 13,290 in 2016)

This is just a fifth of the number of emergency ambulance conveyances those taking the decision to move the out of hours service to Addenbrookes were told were taking place.

One of the key statistics used to justify the move appears not to have accurately reflected the situation with respect to the out-of-hours GP service at Chesterton Medical Centre.

Those taking decisions about the structure of our local health services should ensure they have the information they need in-front of them and that information needs to be accurate.
