Dear Emma Szczambura

I refer to your request for information submitted to Yorkshire Water dated
25 February 2024.

Included with this email are the responses to your questions:

 1. How many septic tanks were recorded by Yorkshire Water in the UK in
years 2014 - 2023?

 2. How many septic tanks were recorded by Yorkshire Water in the West
Yorkshire area in years 2014 - 2023?

 3. How many septic tanks were recorded by Yorkshire Water in the Leeds
West Yorkshire area in years 2014 - 2023?

 4. How many septic tanks were recorded by Yorkshire Water in the Leeds ,
Pudsey West Yorkshire area in years 2014 - 2023?

BD4 , West Yorkshire area in years 2014 - 2023?

 6. When cleaning a septic tank which brand and name of chemicals are used
- please provide for years 2014 – 2024

We are current unable to respond to your request for question 1 to 6 as we
required additional clarification as to what information you would like to
receive.  We wrote to you on the 13 March 2024 requesting this
clarification but have not yet received a response.

We are at this time refusing your request for information following
Regulation 12(4)(c) of the Environmental Information Regulations (EIR)
2004, within the scope of which your request has been considered.  We
welcome you to submit a new request which includes the clarification
requested, this would be treated as a new EIR request.

 7. Is the chemical Methylchloroisothiazolinone that has been banned in
numerous countries included in the ingredients of additives or
cleaning agents you use in tanks that provide drinking water?

We are not aware of any product in use the chemical
Methylchloroisothiazolinone. For context, all chemicals in materials in
use for the production of drinking must be approved under Regulation 31 of
the Water Supply (Water Quality) Regulations 2016 as overseen by the
Drinking Water Inspectorate. We do not believe this compound is approved
for use.

 8. Is Yorkshire water currently carrying out any investigation into the
effects of bromine and chlorine together in drinking water?

We are not currently undertaking any active investigation of chlorine or
bromine in water. However, we are aware of previous investigations.
Chlorine related compounds are intentionally dosed to our supplies in
order to disinfect water before drinking, while bromine related compounds
are naturally occurring at low level in some of our supplies. Both
elements are unlikely to be found at significant concentrations in their
elemental molecular form in drinking water, but are detected as the
relevant dissolved ions chloride and bromide in water. A regulatory
standard applies to the concentration of chloride, but there is no
regulatory standard for bromide in the Water Supply (Water Quality )
Regulations 2016. Our supplies comply with the necessary requirements of
the regulations.

In addition to the specific regulations relating to chloride, we have a
wider responsibility to ensure water supplies are safe to drinking. We pay
close attention to developing understanding of any chemical or compound
that could occur in our supplies. We are not aware of any evidence
indicating a risk to health at the concentrations found in our drinking
waters.

We are also aware of the phenomenon whereby reaction of chlorinated water
supplies with private fittings can lead to the production of chlorine or
bromine substituted phenolic compounds can lead to the development of
unpleasant tastes or odours. Research has demonstrated that root cause of
the taste and odours are degrading rubberised elements of private fittings
not the Companies supply.

I trust that the provision of this data satisfies your request.  In
accordance with the Environmental Information Regulations 2004, if you are
not satisfied with this reply to your request you can ask for an internal
review.  A request for an internal review must be submitted within 40
working days by contacting the Data Protection Team.

Thank you for contacting Yorkshire Water.

Yours sincerely,

Data Protection Team
