Charities with turnover of £1 million or more
Dear Charity Commission for England and Wales,
Please could you provide me with a spreadsheet detailing the name, address, charity number, phone number (if available) and website address (if available) for registered charities with turnovers of £1 million or over.
Yours faithfully,
A Edwards

Dear Enquiries,
I would just like to clarify my request. I realise that I can access this information online but your system limits this to 500 charities out of the 5400+ cited so I'm unable to access this information. I would like to have the details of all 5400+ charities on your database with a turnover of £1 million or more.
Yours sincerely,
A Edwards

Dear Enquiries,
Following on from Becky's suggestion I would like to clarify that a paper document is also fine.
As I mentioned before, I've tried advanced searching but am only able to get 500 of the 5,400+ available organisations.
Yours sincerely,
A Edwards

Dear Mr Edwards
Thank you for your recent email. I am sorry that I could not respond
sooner. I understand that you would like a spreadsheet detailing the name,
address, charity number, phone number and website address for registered
charities with turnovers of £1 million or over.
I have treated this as a request for information under the Freedom of
Information Act 2000 (the Act). The Act imposes a duty, set out in section
1 (1) (a) to confirm or deny whether we hold information of the
description specified in your request. In terms of this request we do hold
information and I have attached this accordingly.
I should explain that this is not our usual approach to requests such as
these, as we consider that the information is available by other means
i.e. it is available by searching the Register of Charities on our
website. I accept your point that our search engine would only show the
first 500 charities and that it would be difficult to access the others.
While difficult, and time consuming, I think that this would be possible
by utilising the search areas and classification areas together with the
income range. It is likely that this would take some time but it should be
possible to extract the information you want this way.
However, on this occasion, and because our electronic systems have
enabled us to do in a reasonable timeframe, I have arranged for a
spreadsheet containing the information requested as taken from the
Register of Charities available on our website. This is attached.
I hope that this is sufficient for your needs but should I have
misunderstood your request in any way please let me know.
Regards

Dear Liam,
Thank you for your help, it is most appreciated.
At first I tried to use the different search areas but I knew I couldn't get everything because when you search overall you get over 5,000 but when you add up the sum of the parts it came to much less. I think this is because when you search on area the data shows charities which work in that area rather than are based in that area.
The only thing is that I've tried to open the attached spreadsheet and for some reason it has lost some data. Sorry to be a pain but I wondered if you could extract the data again as I think the charity name, address, website address (if these details were extracted) were missing.
Thanks again for you help with this.
Yours sincerely,
A Edwards
Dear Mr Edwards
Thank you for your response. I'm sorry I'm not quite sure why that information wasn't available. It should be there. I have attached a further copy but sent this a different way. Hopefully this will work and you will be able to access all the information. If not please let me know and I will review the matter further.
Regards

Mr Edwards - This is likely to exceed to the cost/time limit within the framework of FOIA.
While the Commission can certainly collate the requested information, compiling it into a spreadsheet containing the specific fields you have requested would just take too long.
To prepare such a spreadsheet someone would need to access the details of each of the 5,000 plus charities and enter the data by hand into a new spreadsheet.
They could possibly print the details of each charity's name/number as a list and direct you to their website to extract the contact information youself.
Have you tried using the advanced find function on their website?
