Changing Fee Status During Duration of Study
Dear Cardiff University,
I hope this email finds you well. I am a prospective medical student planning to enrol in September 2025. I hold a Hong Kong BNO visa, requiring five years of UK residency for settled status.
I will obtain settled status during my second year, making me eligible for home fee status as per UK legislation (Higher Education Student Support, Volume 744, January 25, 2024, by Robert Halfon).
Could you confirm that Cardiff University follows this legislation? Additionally, if I inform the university before applying, will I be subject to the government cap on medical students and international entry requirements? Thank you for your time.
Yours faithfully,
Nicole Li

Dear Nicole Li,
I am writing in response to your Freedom of Information request dated
27^th August 2024.
For ease of reference, I have reproduced your questions below and set out
our corresponding responses.
I am a prospective medical student planning to enrol in September 2025. I
hold a Hong Kong BNO visa, requiring five years of UK residency for
settled status.
I will obtain settled status during my second year, making me eligible for
home fee status as per UK legislation (Higher Education Student Support,
Volume 744, January 25, 2024, by Robert Halfon). Could you confirm that
Cardiff University follows this legislation?
Please note that the Welsh Government are responsible for setting fees for
Welsh universities.
At Cardiff University fee status is determined in accordance with the
Education (Fees and Awards) Regulations and with the University’s guiding
principles of fee assessment:
[1]https://www.cardiff.ac.uk/public-informa....
This policy/guidance states “No decision is made with regard to fee status
until we have received a formal application from you“.
Additionally, if I inform the university before applying, will I be
subject to the government cap on medical students and international entry
requirements?
The cap on places is only relevant at the point of offer being made.
Places are offered in order of how an applicant ranks post-interview, so
informing the University in advance cannot circumnavigate this.

requirements and Tuition fees headings at [2]Medicine (MBBCh) - Study -
