Changes to Roles/Pay for (ex) Nurses who are no longer registered

The request was successful.

Dear Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership NHS Trust,

The NHS employees a large number of (ex)nurses in non-clinical roles (management, IM&T, etc), with nursing experience as part of the person spec for the role. Many of them are are external contracts are high rates due to their nursing experience, which they may no longer be able to claim.

With the recent changes to nursing re-validation, will the Trust be reviewing these roles and staff in post for these roles?

Will you be ensuring staff are re-validated?
Will you be removing staff who fail to re-validate and replacing them with still registered staff?
Will you be removing the nursing requirement from the role (and reducing pay band at the same time) - leading to cost savings?

Yours faithfully,

Paul Dean

Our Ref: FOI – 261 – Nurse revalidation

Dear Paul

Re:      Freedom of Information Request

Further to your request for information regarding the above, I am now able
to supply you with the following information.

Request/Response1

The NHS employees a large number of (ex)nurses in non-clinical roles
(management, IM&T, etc.) with nursing experience as part of the person
spec for the role. Many of them are external contracts are high rates due
to their nursing experience, which they may no longer be able to claim.

With the recent changes to nursing re-validation, will the Trust be
reviewing these roles and staff in post for these roles?

Will you be ensuring staff are re-validated?

All posts within the Trust whether they are clinical or non-clinical,
substantive or temporary where registration as a nurse or a midwife is a
requirement are included within the Trusts Revalidation processes.  Where
the staff member is provided through an agency the contract will include a
requirement that the staff member maintains their registration which will
include successful revalidation.  In addition the Trust systems are linked
to the NMC data base and are regularly refreshed.  Each month a report is
prepared that identifies all Trust staff who require registration,
including, but not limited to, nurses and midwives. This report notes both
the date that the staff member is due to re-register and where appropriate
revalidate.

Request/Response 2

Will you be removing staff who fail to re-validate and replacing them with
still registered staff?

Substantively employed staff who fail to revalidate will be removed from
the role they have that requires registration and will be redeployed,
where possible, to a post that does not require registration.  Clinically
this may be to a Health Care Assistant role in non-clinical roles the
alternative will be case specific.  If the staff member continues to fail
to revalidate, their continued employment will be reviewed on a case by
case basis.  For temporary staff working in a role that requires NMC
registration but who fail to maintain this registration whether this is
linked to revalidation or not, they would be removed from the post and an
alternative staff member sought.

Request/Response 3

Will you be removing the nursing requirement from the role (and reducing
pay band at the same time) - leading to cost savings?

All posts are reviewed as part of any recruitment process to ensure the
Job Description and Person Specification remain relevant and up to date.
We have no plans to review the nursing requirement of any role based
solely on the need to revalidate, rather it is the need for the skills and
competence that effect the contents of the Job Description and Person
Specification.

I trust that this information is of use to you. Please do not hesitate to
