GRO Policy,

Dear Amanda

Thank you for your email.

Your request has been handled as official correspondence rather than as a request for information under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, although this does not mean that your enquiry has been actioned any differently or that the information provided contains any less content or detail.

Certified copies (certificates) are produced from an entry in a register held by this office. The form and content of a certificate has changed over the years and is provided for in legislation. Regulations set out how information appears on a certificate.

Louise

GRO Policy,

Dear Amanda

Thank you for your further question in your email of 7 March 2021 regarding style manuals .

The General Register Office can confirm there is no such manual of styles. The form and the content of the entry from which a certified copy is issued and the short form birth certificate is set out in legislation and has changed over the years. The format of a certified copy of an entry or a birth certificate is determined by the law applicable at the time of the birth.
