Ryan, Steve, Lothian Buses Limited

Dear Ms. Whittle,

I must first apologise for the delay in responding to your Freedom Of
Information request (see copy below) related to the use of CCTV in our
business. The fault is entirely mine - I made a mistake when I first
logged the details of your request and that caused me to lose track of the
deadline.

The situation with regard to the CCTV installed on our bus fleet is as
follows.

Six Hundred and Sixteen (616) of our buses are fitted with CCTV equipment
and of that number Three Hundred and Forty-One (341) are capable of
recording sound. The sound recording facility on buses which are so
equipped is limited to a single directional microphone in the driver's cab
area. There is no sound recording capability in any other part of the
vehicle.

The manufacturer of our CCTV equipment is -

The length of time which footage may be "kept" varies. Ours is a digital
system where the footage is stored on a demountable hard disk. When a
disk is full, the earliest footage on it is simply written over. The
length of time taken to fill a disk will depend on the number of cameras
on a particular vehicle and the number of hours which that bus operates
- some buses may operate for four hours on a particular day while other
buses in the fleet can operate for up to eighteen hours in a day. The
period of operation for each bus is different every day. In general, the
longest period for which footage is likely to remain accessible is seven
days.

We do not routinely examine CCTV footage, it is simply consulted when a
particular accident, incident or complaint requires investigation. Where
CCTV evidence is requested in relation to a Police investigation, we pass
a copy of the required footage to the investigating officers. That is the
end of our involvement, we do not retain a copy ourselves.

I hope that this information is helpful and appropriate for your purpose.
Again, please accept my apology for the delay in responding to your
request.

sincerely,

Stephen Ryan
