Cavehill Rd cycle lane

We're waiting for Steven mcbriden to read recent responses and update the status.

Dear Department for Infrastructure (Northern Ireland), my daughter is extremely worried having just learned of proposed cycle lane on Cavehill Road where residents already struggle with parking. Residents don’t appear to have been consulted as its news to her neighbours. I’ve tried to assure her that the scheme will likely take a sensible approach and utilise footpath but from recent irish news article I’m now not so sure. Can I please have a copy of any proposed routes and detail of any considerations for residents parking on what is ready an area that struggles with parking for residents. My daughter and her children cycle and have no need for a cycle lane, but she does need a car which is critical for her work and so needs somewhere to park it.

Yours faithfully, Sam S McBriden

Dear Philip/Darren, thank you for your reply which provided a bit more information. In noting that the scheme has given no consideration to residents and parking I have to say I am disappointed but not surprised as these schemes seem to lack any regard or consideration for residents. It also suggests that only lip service will be paid to the concerns raised by traders, groups that use the park, and indeed residents. Visitors are one thing but where are people who live on the Cavehill Rd expected to park? Side streets are narrow and already full with people who live there often having to park on footpaths. Unless residents parking is considered this will inevitably cause significant social issues and also lead to neighbourhood disputes over parking.
If not being considered already can the park itself not be considered as it has a path already that runs parallel to the Cavehill Rd along the most problematic stretch. Limestone is less problematic as there are no houses on the road front city bound, but Cavehill Rd has housing on the road front with no off street parking and no capacity in the narrow side streets. The Cavehill Rd above Westland has wider side streets and some houses have driveways, but not all, and there are also traders you are aware of that will be seriously affected as they rely on cars being able to park for custom. Someone really needs to visit the area at key times to see the necessity for parking and speak with residents.
Regards
SS McB

Yours sincerely,

Steven mcbriden
