Dear Jamie

I refer to our acknowledgement on 20/3/19  in respect of your request for
information under the provisions of the Freedom of Information Act.

Please accept my apologies for the slight delay encountered during the
processing of your request. Thank you for your patience at this time.

We are able to provide the following information:

Information requested Trust response
Please can you give me some Please see attached Excel workbook. The
information into the following on average response times, in seconds, for
a CSV/Excel file: Category 1 Incidents from 01 Apr 2018 -
31 Mar 2019 by postcode area have been
  provided. The following points should
however be noted:
Number of CAT/RED 1 Calls

Response Times
·         The Department of Health set
Commercial or private or public average response targets to an ambulance
address service’s whole geographical area rather
than specific postcodes or towns. This
broken down by Postcode area. allows for the natural variance in
response times that some ambulance
  services may experience, particularly in
our more challenging rural communities.
Between 1/4/2018 - 31/3/2019

·         Due to the way in which the
Trust’s Computer Aided Dispatch system
logs ‘999’ incidents it is not possible
for us to produce a report
differentiating between private, public,
and commercial properties.

·         The workbook contains data on
a small number of Out of Area postcodes.
As you may be aware, the Trust has
reciprocal arrangements with its
neighbouring ambulance services (such as
South Central Ambulance Service) where
we will provide a response at their
request subject to availability. As such
these figures have been included for
completeness.

The system used by the Trust’s Clinical
hubs to prioritise ‘999’ calls is called
the Medical Priority Dispatch System
(MPDS) - which is an internationally
recognised protocol for emergency
prioritisation.

‘Category 1’ refers to those patients
with the most urgent clinical needs
who are in an immediately
life-threatening condition, such as
those in cardiac or respiratory arrest
(no heart beat and not breathing ), or
those with an airway obstruction or
ineffective breathing. This category
makes up approximately 8% of all ‘999’
calls.

Resources responding to ‘Category 1’
incidents are crewed by clinicians
appropriately trained in the use of a
defibrillator and able to give advanced
life support. Ambulance resources will
respond to ‘Category 1’ incidents using
blue lights and sirens in order to
arrive as soon as possible.

The national target from the Department
of Health is for the Trust to attend
Category 1 incidents within 15 minutes
on at least 90 percent of occasions,
with an average response time of seven
minutes.
