Dear Ms McEoin

Further to your FOI request the University considers a supervisor to be
anyone who oversees and manages a team to ensure that they are performing
effectively.  Supervisors span a range of portfolios and the University
does not record data on whether staff are acting in a supervisory
capacity.  If you wish to refine your request please don’t hesitate to do
so.

If you are unhappy with how the University has dealt with your request you
may raise the matter under the University's internal review process for
FOI requests. Please submit written details of your appeal to Mr Eamon
Mullan, University Secretary, Room J312, University of Ulster, Coleraine
BT52 1SA, email at [1][email address]. The University will normally
undertake to issue a decision on an appeal within 20 working days of
receipt.

If you do not wish to submit an appeal to the University in relation to
your request or if you are unhappy with the outcome of an appeal you may
apply to the Office of the Information Commissioner. Full particulars of
the FOI Act including the Information Commissioner's address may be found

Dear Ms McEoin

 1. What are the categories/types of supervisors available/recognised at
Ulster University?

Supervisors are commonly identified for undergraduate
dissertations/projects; dissertations/projects in taught Master's degrees;
and for research degrees.  If there is a project or dissertation-style
piece of work in other courses, e.g. a Postgraduate Diploma, there may be
a supervisor (this may explain the distinction made in Q2 below between
‘masters’ and ‘postgraduate taught’).

2.      For the types of categories/types of supervisors, how many
supervisors were for below, please provide a breakdown for each
faculty/departments/schools?
•       For masters students
•       For postgraduate-taught students
•       For postgraduate students
The University does not hold a central record of categories/types of
supervisors.

3.      For the types of categories/types of supervisors, please provide a
breakdown of the number of supervisors at Ulster University for the years:

•       2017-2018
•       2018-2019
•       2019-2020
Please see response to question 2 above.

4.      A copy of procedure/guideline or policy on handling / controlling
for the types of supervisors recognised by Ulster University.

No detailed policy/guideline in taught courses apart from brief references
in the Guidelines for the preparation of Dissertations for Master’s
Degrees, clause 1 para 2 and clause 3, para 1 (in Regulations booklet
2019-20 - p52:
[1]https://www.ulster.ac.uk/__data/assets/p...)
and in section of the Assessment Handbook on Dissertations and Project
Reports (10.2 - p.40

booklet) and Associated Rules and Guidelines - Guidelines for the
Appointment  of Supervisors (pp 66-67, 73-74, 86-87).

5.      A copy of the terms of the agreement provided for the types of
supervisors recognised by Ulster University.
As above.

6.      For the types of categories/types of supervisors, who owns the
intellectual property rights if the University supervises a student?
