Cartel in Medico-legal Reporting

chris jones made this Freedom of Information request to Competition Commission

This request has been closed to new correspondence from the public body. Contact us if you think it ought be re-opened.

Competition Commission did not have the information requested.

Dear Competition Commission,

The establishment of the 'Association of Medical Reporting Organisations' has led to the fixing of payment amounts and terms for many separate and distinct companies. By agreeing to fix the payment charges for expert medical reports they have served to eliminate downward or upward pressure on charges for expert medical reports. This constitutes a cartel; have you investigated this or any other cartel in relation to the provision of expert medico-legal reports ? what was the outcome?

Yours faithfully,

chris jones

Dear Mr. Jones,

Thank you for emailing the Competition Commission concerning Cartels in
relation to Medico-Legal Reports.

The [1]Competition Commission  (CC) is one of the independent public
bodies which help ensure healthy competition between companies in the UK
for the benefit of companies, customers and the economy. Our inquiries are
always initiated following a concern referred to us by another authority:
usually the [2]Office of Fair Trading. We also investigate issues referred
to us by the sector regulators for communications, gas and electricity,
water, rail, airports, postal services, or by the Secretary of State for
Business, Innovation and Skills,  we cannot investigate companies or
markets without a referral from one of these bodies.  As the Commission
has not looked at an inquiry into the above, I regret we are unable to
assist with your query.

The appropriate body for you to contact in this instance is the Enquiries
and Reporting Centre at the Office of Fair Trading (OFT). The Office of
Fair Trading is an independent professional organisation that plays a
leading role in promoting and protecting consumer interests throughout the
UK, while ensuring that businesses are fair and competitive.

The OFT Enquiries and Reporting Centre can be e-mailed at
[3][email address].  Alternatively, they can be contacted by
telephone on 08457 22 44 99. In this case you should wait for the third
option which deals with Enterprise and Competition Act queries.  This will
take you to the Enquiries and Reporting Centre.

Yours sincerely,

Cilla Mitchell
