I write in connection with regards to your request received in this office
on 17th September.  I note you seek the following:

 

1. I would like to know how many car thefts there have been in the
Cleveland area in the past three years. Any data around this time would be

2019/20 – 260 (to end of August)

2018/19 – 602

2017/18 – 607

 

2. How many of these thefts led to a conviction?

It the duty  of Cleveland Police to identify, apprehend suspects,
decisions regarding prosecutions is the responsibility of the Crown
Prosecution Service and Convictions is that of HM Courts Service therefore
Conviction data is held by HM Courts.

However we can provide how many have been charged/summonsed.

2019/20 – 12 (to end of August)

2018/19 – 46

2017/18 – 59

 

3. How many cars were recovered following the thefts?

2019/20 – 115 (to end of August)

2018/19 – 339

2017/18 – 373

 

Having made enquiries within the Force above is all the information we
have been able to retrieve.

 

Please note that all statistical data supplied in relation to Freedom of
Information requests is a snapshot of data held at the time the request
was received by the Freedom of Information office and is subject to
constant change/updates.

 

The Cleveland Police response to your request is unique and it should be
noted that Police Forces do not use generic systems or identical
procedures to capture and record data therefore responses from Cleveland
Police should not be used as a comparison with any other force response
you receive.
