Car Parks and Walking Trails in the Thetford Forest Area

Robert Whittaker made this Freedom of Information request to Forestry Commission

The request was partially successful.

Dear Forestry Commission,

I've recently been looking for official information on car parks and walking routes near me, as I believe that you may have closed or reduced the size of some car parks, and removed some of the way-marked trails.

I notice that you've recently been working on migrating / re-vamping your website, and that information about recreational sites can now be found at https://www.forestryengland.uk/ . It appears that not all the recreational content that was previously online has not been migrated to the new website. In particular, the only sites in Thetford Forest with online information seem to be High Lodge, Lynford Stag and Lynford Arboretum ( https://www.forestryengland.uk/thetford-... ). I'm pretty sure that there used to be web pages for High Ash (Dessert Rats Memorial Trail), Great Hockham, West Stowe, St Helens, and possibly others too. Also. I cannot find any maps on your new site showing the routes of the walking trails.

Therefore I'd be grateful if you could supply me with a list of the official FC car public parks that are still open in the Thetford Forest area, ideally with lat/lon or grid reference locations, and an approximate number of parking spaces for each. Also could you provide a list of FC managed way-marked walking trails that still exist in the Thetford Forest area, and copies of any official maps that you have for these.

If your website migration is still underway and you are planning to add the above information to https://www.forestryengland.uk/ in the near future, then please let me know, as I may be happy to withdraw my request.

Yours faithfully,

Robert Whittaker

Commissioners, Forestry Commission

Dear Mr Whittaker,

Many thanks for your enquiry to the Forestry Commission. The migration to the new web site forestryengland.uk is not yet complete and there are still a number of web pages relating to recreation sites across Thetford that still need to be created. Due to the complex nature and scale of the website migration project we have needed to prioritise this process creating content and web pages relating to the most visited sites first. This is why you can see Lynford Arboretum and High Lodge. We are now in the process of uploading new content and would expect the next tranche of sites to go live early next year and this will include some more of the Thetford recreational sites, this will include information relating to parking and facilities. There has been no changes to public access / parking / walks within the public forest estate as a result of the website changes. I hope this answer your queries and that you are happy to bear with us while we complete the process of uploading the rest of the information. Once complete, the new website will contain all of the sites that were listed before.

I hope this response has been helpful to you.

Best wishes

Jenny King

Dear Jenny King,

Many thanks for your quick response. In light of what you say about the website migration still being in progress, I'm happy to wait for the details to be added to the new site. You can close this request, and I'll get back in touch with you later in the new year if necessary.

Yours sincerely,

Robert Whittaker
