Dear Wirral Metropolitan Borough Council,
Could you tell me how much money was collected for car parking charges on the Wirral April 13/14/.?
Could you tell me how much was overpayed by motorists who put extra money in as they did not have the right change?

Yours faithfully,

Ralph Champion

I overpaid, got back 8 mins late and was slapped with a £25 fine. They probably make more out of fines than charges.

Mersey Tunnels, I believe, manage to work out how much has been overpaid by motorists and then donate the excess to charity. It's a shame WBC can't be as transparent as that organisation in this respect. I mean...who knows what happens to these excess receipts if there is no proper accounting of them....?

I would have thought the machines would have a record that says " There is £100 in me but I only have receipts for £98". Therefore there is £2 extra to be accounted for.Is this not recorded anywhere?

If this is symptomatic of the level of internal financial control operated by Wirral Council this is frightening.

You could try asking again when the council makes its end of year accounts available for public inspection in about July. The accounts are open for scrutiny for a month, I think, and usually a request form appears on this page

So if they can't tell how much has been overpaid they how do they now how much the Parking staff are stealing?

Poor Audit procedures again by WBC!
