Paul McGarry, Merton Borough Council

Dear Mark.

Freedom of Information Act 2000 / Environmental Information Regulations
2004 Information request F13023

We have now considered your information request as set out below.

You asked:

Which roads in Merton have been requested to be closed for #CarFreeDay on
22 September 2019?

Have any been refused and for what reasons.

Our response:

Merton Council supported residents in hosting Play Streets for World Car
Free Day 2019.

The Council received 20 applications from residents and groups. Some
applicants withdrew their interest, resulting in 14 applications being
approved for Play Streets.

Play Streets for 22 September are listed below.

Play Street Number Road to be closed Start Location End Location
PS/002 Elm Walk Cannon Hill Southway

PS/003 Merton Hall Gardens 11 The 53a The Quadrant

PS/018 Mawson Close Cul-de-sac Cul-de-sac
PS/019 Mayfield Road Wilton Hartfield Road

PS/010 Dinton Road and Kimble  n/a n/a
Road

No applications were refused.

However Dinton Road and Kimble Road in Colliers Wood were initially two
separate applications. As the streets join each other, the Council invited
the applicants to join-up their Play Streets. This event was held as a
single event spanning both roads.

In addition to the resident led Play Streets. Merton Council in
partnership with Transport for London hosted a Play Street event at Morden
Bus Station.

There has been a long-held desire amongst the community to create a
pedestrian space outside Morden Underground Station. The bus station is
the largest source of poor air quality in Morden. Car free day offered an
opportunity to close the bus station for a large Play Street event.
