Dear Jamie Dixon
Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA)
Thank you for your request, which was received on 26 April, for the following information:
“Under the Freedom of Information Act, I would like to request the fol owing information:
a) The total amount of Capital Gains Tax paid in the UK on crypto assets in 2022 and 2021,
with a separate annual figure for each year.
b) The amount of Capital Gains Tax paid on crypto assets in 2022 and 2021, split by local
authority area, with a separate figure for each year.
Please can you provide this data for both calendar years (1st January - 31st December) and
tax years (6th April - 5th April).”
Our response
We do not hold the information requested. Although taxpayers are required to declare gains
made on cryptoassets, these cannot be identified from data collected via Self Assessment
as they are reported in the ‘Other property, assets, and gains’ section of the Capital Gains
Tax return.
Please note, that high-level information on asset type breakdowns can be found in Table 7
of th
e Capital Gains Tax National Statistics. If you are not satisfied with our reply, you may request a review within 40 working days of
receiving this letter by emailing
xxx.xxxxxx@xxxx.xxx.xx or by writing to our address at the
top.
If you are not content with the outcome of an internal review you can
complain to the
Information Commissioner’s Office.
Yours sincerely,
HM Revenue and Customs
