Capacity of bus services serving Newcastle

The request was partially successful.

Dear Northern Ireland Transport Holding Company,
I note Newry, Mourne & Down District Council's ambitions for the proposed 'Mourne Gateway Project' (https://www.newrymournedown.org/mournes-...), including receiving an anticipated 350,000 visitors annually in a 'sustainable' fashion, which might well be considered to involve public transport.

In the light of this, please could you provide information on the current capacity of the Ulsterbus & Goldline network to deliver passengers to Newcastle. Specifically:
What is the maximum daily passenger-carrying capacity of services visiting Newcastle and arriving there before 5pm? Please could you break this down the data by:
- originating depot of the services (e.g. Belfast, Downpatrick, Lisburn, Newry, Banbridge, etc) and their service number (e.g. No.240, 20, 26b etc)
- operating day (i.e. service timetable on weekdays, Saturdays, Sundays), noting days in the calendar year with no service (e.g. Christmas Day) or a reduced service (e.g. bank holidays)

Please could you also provide an approximate estimate of the current percentage of seats typically occupied on these above services in 2024, and thus how much spare percentage capacity for conveying additional passengers currently exists in the timetable.

Yours faithfully,
Ligand Fields

Response

Following searches by the relevant team within Translink, and as required
by section 1(1)(a) Freedom of Information Act, we can confirm that we hold
some of the information requested.

Please find attached breakdown of service capacity as requested.

Capacity on services to Newcastle Mon ‚Äď Sun January - March 2024

Mon-Fri *               3126 x 5 = 15,630 seats

Sat                           2003 x 1 =  2,003 seats

Sun                           1461 x 1 = 1,461 seats

Weekly Total                           19,094 seats

*(Note: The Mon-Fri total of 3126 seats is multiplied by 5 for Mon - Fri,
as the list is for one operating day.)

The attached PDF sets out the originating depots and service numbers.

Utilisation of these services is difficult to ascertain, due to
intermediate journeys undertaken on them and school pupil data not
available. This information cannot be easily collected due to the various
stage options and combinations, and specifically paper pupil passes.
