Dear Department for Work and Pensions,
I refer to the following Huffpost story concerning the closure of job centres:
'A spokesman for the DWP, however, said that support is always given to those in need and that funds are available for people to apply for to help pay for travel costs. However these payments are discretionary.'
1. Can you confirm that all payments for travel costs to claimants attending job centre appointments (mandatory attendance) are discretionary, including payments to those whose journey time exceeds one hour each way?
2. Please provide all staff guidance available to determine whether a claimant can get a payment to cover their travel costs in respect of a job centre appointment.
3. For Canterbury Jobcentre Plus, please provide for the month of February 2019:
i. the number of requests received from claimants for money to cover their travel costs to attend job centre appointments;
ii. the number of claimants whose requests were successful; and
iii. the total amount of discretionary travel payments made in respect of claimants who attended appointments.
4. Please provide a copy/copies of any standard form/s claimants must complete to obtain a payment to cover their travel costs when attending a job centre appointment.
