Can you confirm that the majority of claimants are seeing their benefits refused as they have been wrongly assessed?

General Medical Council did not have the information requested.

Dear General Medical Council,
Can you confirm that the majority of claimants are seeing their benefits refused as they have been wrongly assessed?
Can you also confirm please that there is a target to fail 80% of PIP claims?
Can you also confirm that assessors working for private assessing companies are generally Physiotherapists, Low level nurses, Para-medics with very few doctors and no Specialists?
Can you also confirm that you are aware that medical evidence is ignored in these assessments and in the reports and that the reports are not in-keeping with the conditions the assessors are presented with?

Yours faithfully,

Trudy Baddams

Dear Ms Baddams

Our ref:  F19/9956/CA

Thank you for your request of 24 January 2019, which has been considered
under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA).   The FOIA enables you
to ask for recorded information that is held by a public authority.

The General Medical Council registers and regulates the practice of
doctors in the UK.   Other health professionals are regulated by different
bodies.

You ask about the assessment of claims for Personal Independence Payments
on behalf of the Department for Work and Pensions.    The GMC does not
hold information about the operation of these assessments and therefore we
are unable to comment.   Although registered doctors may be involved in
the process, we don’t record any information about the system as a whole,
as it is not within our remit to do so.   If we received a complaint about
the practice or conduct of a particular doctor who had assessed a claim,
then we may have collected some information relevant to your request, but
it would be in relation to a specific patient.

I’m sorry that I can’t provide any information, and would suggest that
your request should be directed to the DWP.

Yours sincerely

Dear Ms Baddams

Our ref: F19/9956/CA

Thank you for your email.

In my response of 30 January I stated that the General Medical Council does not hold the information you have requested, and we are unable to comment on your questions. I suggested that information may be held by the DWP and you may wish to direct your request to them.

If you would like us to conduct an internal review, it would be helpful if you could explain the reasons for your complaint, to assist us in responding.
