Dear Kayon,

Thank you for your information request, 12th April where you asked for - Can PCR TEST recognize if a virus is alive or dead

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) is responsible for regulating all medical devices and medicines in the UK by ensuring they work and are acceptably safe. One of our main responsibilities is investigating adverse incidents involving medical devices. If you have any safety concerns about a medical device, you can report it via https://yellowcard.mhra.gov.uk/. We encourage everyone, whether patients, healthcare providers, manufacturers or members of the public who have a safety concern where a medical device might be involved , to submit a yellow card report.

PCR tests use primers that target specific genetic material to the virus of interest. Viruses can change over time and manufacturers of tests constantly monitor the performance of their tests as part of their post market surveillance to ensure they continue to be effective at detecting the virus of interest.

I hope you find this information provided has been helpful.
