Between 01/01/2017 and 31/12/2017, how many convictions for controlling or coercive behaviour in intimate or familial relationships were there in the West Midlands?

Yours faithfully,

Miss Phillips

Freedom of Information,

Dear Miss Phillips

FOI Request Reference: 003079/18

Thank you for your request for information, received 20/03/2018

REQUEST

I am writing to make an open government request for all the information to
which I am entitled under the Freedom of Information Act 2000.

Between 01/01/2017 and 31/12/2017, how many calls to West Midlands Police
were logged as domestic violence incidents?

Between 01/01/2017 and 31/12/2017, how many convictions for controlling or
coercive behaviour in intimate or familial relationships were there in the
West Midlands?

RESPONSE

Some relevant information can be found on the following website

[1]http://foi.west-midlands.police.uk/coerc...

Our data are not organised in such a way as to allow us to provide
conviction data without

researching each individual case would exceed the appropriate limit (FOIA,
s.12 (1)).

Therefore, the cost of compliance with your request is above the amount to
which we are legally required to respond, i.e. the cost of locating and
retrieving the information would exceed the appropriate costs limit under
section 12 of the Freedom of information Act 2000. For West Midlands
Police, the appropriate limit is set at £450, as prescribed by the Freedom
of Information and Data Protection (Appropriate Limit and Fees)
Regulations 2004, S.I. 3244.

A public authority which, in relation to any request for information, is
relying on a claim that section 12 or section 14 applies must, within the
time for complying with Section 1(1), give the applicant a notice stating
that fact. In accordance with the Freedom of Information Act 2000, this
letter acts as a refusal notice.

However rather than refusing your request outright at this stage, I would
like to explore with you how West Midlands Police may best assist you to
request relevant information which we hold. Within the cost limit we could
the conduct the following searches

Between 01/01/2017 and 31/12/2017, how many calls to West Midlands Police
were logged as domestic violence incidents

To enable us to proceed with your request I would be grateful if you could
confirm whether you wish us to provide the information outlined above.
After receiving your reply, your request will be considered and you will
receive a response within the statutory timescale of 20 working days, as
defined by the Act, subject to the application of any statutory
exemptions. If you chose not to respond then your request will remain
unanswered.

For further information and data on West Midlands Police see our
publication scheme and disclosure log

Dear Miss Phillips

FOI Request Reference: 003303/18

Thank you for your request for information, received 26/03/2018

REQUEST

Between 01/01/2017 and 31/12/2017, how many calls to West Midlands Police
were logged as domestic violence incidents

RESPONSE

Please find attached  our response.

Please note that these data should be interpreted with caution. Comparing
numbers of incidents/crimes can be misleading and does not necessarily
indicate the likelihood of someone being a victim of crime. In addition,
the number of incidents/crimes recorded in an area over a period of time
can be influenced by a number of factors. Consequently statistics on
incidents/crimes for one period may not necessarily be a good indicator of
future incidents in that area.

Every effort is made to ensure that the figures presented are accurate and
complete. However, it is important to note that these data have been
extracted from a number of data sources used by forces for police
purposes. The detail collected to respond specifically to your request is
subject to the inaccuracies inherent in any large scale recording system.
As a consequence, care should be taken to ensure data collection processes
and their inevitable limitations are taken into account when interpreting
those data.

The figures provided therefore are our best interpretation of relevance of
data to your request, but you should be aware that the collation of
figures for ad hoc requests may have limitations and this should be taken
into account when those data are used.

If you decide to write an article / use the enclosed data we would ask you
to take into consideration the factors highlighted in this document so as
to not mislead members of the public or official bodies, or misrepresent
the relevance of the whole or any part of this disclosed material.

As recommended as good practice by the Information Commissioner’s Office a
version of this response may be published on the West Midlands Police
website.
