Brian Mottershead, North Wales Fire and Rescue Service

Dear Sir,

Further to your recent request made under the terms of the Freedom of Information Act regarding the Fire Brigades Union industrial action of September 25th 2013, the response from North Wales Fire and Rescue Service (NWFRS) is as follows:

1) How many callouts occurred on September 25th 2013 between 12pm-4pm? 3 incidents attended during this period.

2) What are the average callout figures per day for the year so far? This year to date there has been an average of 19 incidents attended per day (based on financial year, Apr-Sept: 3,507 attended incidents / 183 days)

3) The number and percentage of firefighters who went on strike on September 25th 2013.

I can confirm that NWFRS holds this information. This information is exempt under Section 38 (Health and Safety) of the Freedom of Information Act and is therefore being withheld.

Section 38 provides an exemption from disclosing information if such disclosure would endanger any individual. NWFRS believes that if details about the number of firefighters on strike during the industrial action were to be publicised it might encourage deliberate fire-setting during future periods of such action, thereby endangering the general public.

Having considered the public interest, the decision of NWFRS is therefore to withhold the information.

4) A breakdown of the number and type of incidents responded to between 12pm and 4pm on September 25 2013. 1 Accidental Dwelling Fire, 1 Deliberate Primary (Non-residential) Fire, 1 RTC.
