Dear Mr Porter

Thank you for your information request, submitted with Mid Ulster District
Council under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the Act) on 03/04/2024
regarding business rates.
The council has considered your request and responds as detailed.

Q1. By what percentage have the business rates you have collected for the
last three years increased?

Response: From the outset I can advise that local councils in Northern
Ireland do not collect rates, instead that collection function is carried
out by Land and Property Services, contact details available from the
following link [1]Land & Property Service.

Councils do, however, set the District Rate element of the rates bill
levied on ratepayers. This is made up of the domestic and non domestic
rates and I have assumed from your query that your reference to “business
rates” relates to the “non-domestic” element of the District Rate. In
relation to the non-domestic element of the District Rate, this Council
has applied the following rate increases:-

• 2021/22 - rate struck reflected a 0% increase from the equivalent non
domestic district rate in 2020/21
• 2022/23 - rate struck reflected a 3.9% increase from the equivalent
non domestic district rate in 2021/22
• 2023/24 – rate struck reflected a 4.32% increase from the equivalent
non domestic district rate in 2022/23

Please see link for brief explanation and also confirmation of the
district rate set by Mid Ulster District Council for the current financial
year 2024/25 of 5.9% for domestic and business rates - [2]Rates
