Bus vehicle specifications, branding guidance and livery design for franchised bus services
Dear Liverpool City Region Combined Authority,
I have a freedom of information request.
Transport for London has published bus vehicle specifications and design standards for London Buses (including branding, bus livery, shelter, bus stop etc.).
https://tfl.gov.uk/corporate/transparenc...
https://tfl.gov.uk/info-for/suppliers-an...
Would you be able to publish a document of your bus vehicle specifications, including your new hydrogen buses that you have purchased, and a document of your branding guidance and livery design for your franchised bus services?
Are there plans to purchase more zero-emission buses, including the use of dual-doors, which London Buses specifies to reduce dwell times at bus stops?
Yours faithfully,
Natalie Bunce

Would you be able to publish a document of your bus vehicle
specifications, including your new hydrogen buses that you have purchased,
and a document of your branding guidance and livery design for your
franchised bus services?
The recently-introduced hydrogen buses are a trial to test both the
technology and the passenger features so they will inform our future
thinking for sure. Individual specifications are currently under
consideration as part of the bus reform process for future new bus
deliveries, possible Zero Emission retrofitting and any existing fleet
that is likely to continue to play a role in delivering the region's
network. Once all of these factors have been finalised, consideration will
be given to publishing documents similar to those created by TfL.
The specification for these first twenty buses is an ADL Enviro 400FCEV
with the 11.1m long full height City Body style, passenger capacity of 88
(73 seated and 15 standing), twin accessible bays, full audio visual
announcements (3 screens) with hearing loop and integration with rail real
time on the approach to railways stations on bus routes.
We have integrated best practice from the transport industry into our
Metro livery design, blending a design lead approach to the use of
colours, shapes and internal materials to make the bus more desirable to
look at and travel on whilst tying in the Mayoral commitment for an
integrated transport system.
On this trial batch of buses that includes deleting commercial advertising
to re-enforce positive messaging about the bus service such as key
destinations and communities served, attractive frequency of buses on
these routes incentive messaging about the many reasons why buses are
attractive to use in an effort to encourage motorists to think
differently.
Are there plans to purchase more zero-emission buses, including the use of
dual-doors, which London Buses specifies to reduce dwell times at bus
stops?
This batch of buses was specified with single door access because our
roadside infrastructure is currently configured for single door buses as
used by the current operators. The current ticketing system and ways of
operation in the Liverpool City Region currently favour single door
operation.
Consideration is being given to the role dual door buses might have to
play in future in speeding journeys up and reducing dwell times. There is
a need for this to be balanced with the need to both ensure roadside
infrastructure is upgraded so it works safely and that mitigations are in
place to minimise fare evasion, which can often be a challenge for dual
door operations. We may be able to provide further information in future
once the bus reform decisions are taken.
The Metro Mayor has given a commitment to operate a zero emission fleet of
buses across the region by 2040. Work is currently underway on the
strategy for how this will be delivered and which technologies will be
used. The HyBus trial and learnings from a number of other zero emission
bus project across the country will provide input to this strategy but we
are also considering how infrastructure put in to decarbonise our bus
fleet might be fully utilised to help drive the wider decarbonisation of
the road transport sector. This is particularly important because whilst
the overall road transport sector is one of the highest sources of
pollution, the existing diesel bus fleet only accounts for around 4% of
these emissions so the choices we make for buses could trigger much wider
progress in making our communities healthier and reducing damage to the
wider environment.
