The request was successful.

Dear Transport for London,

Under the freedom of information, could you tell me the unit cost (i.e. including removal and installation) of replacing a bus stop, with the new solar powered variant; and the total cost of the project so far, with the expected cost at completion to TFL.

Could you also provide the unit cost of replacing an old dark metal bus shelter, with the new red and light grey bus shelter. In addition, the total cost of the project so far; and the expected cost at completion to TFL.

And finally, the cost of installing a countdown (bus eta system) to a single bus shelter.

FOI, Transport for London

Dear Mr Earle

TfL Ref: FOI-1375-1213

Thank you for your email received by Transport for London (TfL) on 19
November 2012 asking for information about the cost of replacing a bus
stop with a new solar powered variant and the cost of replacing an old
dark metal bus shelter with a new one.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of
the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act and TfL’s information access policy.

Unfortunately, from the description provided, we are unable to identify
some of the information you require.

To enable us to assist with your request, please provide a more detailed
description of the information you’re seeking. You asked about a project
cost relating to the replacement of bus shelters. Please note we replace
or repair a certain number of bus shelters when and if needed, for example
when they are either damaged, old or are causing some problems. The cost
associated with replacing a bus shelter varies on a number of factors such
as a location, if it’s based on a bridge for instance the cost will be
different, or if there are utilities found underneath it. There is no
project to replace bus shelters as such. To provide you with a realistic
cost of replacing a bus shelter with a new one, it would help if you could
provide us with specific examples. For example can you provide us with the
location details of where you have seen an old bus stop replaced with a
new variant together with any other details you think might help us locate
the information you require.

Please note that the 20 working day deadline for responding to your
request will depend on when we receive satisfactory additional information
to help clarify your request.

If we hear nothing further from you by 18 December 2012 your response
will be treated as a new request.

In the meantime, if you have any queries or would like to discuss your
request, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Yours sincerely

Dear FOI,

In your rely of 27th, you seem to contradict yourself, by saying there's no replacement project, but one of the reasons to replace shelters stated is been 'old'. The shelters I've seen in my area replaced, have had no visible damage and were perfectly serviceable and well maintained prior to their swap. For example along the 184 route, north London, there has been at least six to ten this year; there were a further two in progress along the 221 route yesterday.

For the solar powered bus stops, which are randomly spread across north London; you should be able to give the total cost so far and the number installed.

You have not mentioned the cost of adding the countdown system to a shelter, which I also requested.

Yours sincerely,

Mr A Earle

Dear FOI,

This appears to be a repeat request from the 27th.

In your rely of 27th, you seem to contradict yourself, by saying there's no replacement project, but one of the reasons to replace shelters stated is been 'old'. The shelters I've seen in my area replaced, have had no visible damage and were perfectly serviceable and well maintained prior to their swap. For example along the 184 route, north London, there has been at least six to ten this year; there were a further two in progress along the 221 route. For the 'unit cost', I expected you would provide an average cost; likewise with installation and removal. If you're replacing stops and shelters when 'old', please state what age is it necessary for them to be replaced? also with total cost so far, or cost per year across Gt. London.

For the solar powered bus stops, which are randomly spread across north London; you should be able to give the total cost so far and the number installed.

You have not mentioned the cost of adding the countdown system to a
shelter, which I also requested.

Yours sincerely,

Mr A Earle

Dear Mr Earle

TfL Ref: FOI-1375-1213

Thank you for your email received by Transport for London (TfL) on 19
November 2012 asking for information about the cost of replacing a bus
stop with a new solar powered variant and the cost of replacing an old bus
shelter with a  new one.

Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of
the Freedom of Information Act and TfL’s information access policy. I can
confirm TfL holds some of the information you require. You asked for:

1. Could you tell me the unit cost (i.e. including removal and
installation) of replacing a bus stop, with the new solar powered variant;
the total cost of the project so far, with the expected cost at completion
to TfL.

TfL has not engaged in an on-going project to remove old stops and replace
them with new infrastructure with solar power. However, we have upgraded
3,660 existing stops so that they are enabled for solar power at an
average cost per stop of £1,349.00. This was completed in 2009 and cost
£4,940,000.  In a separate project to replace bus stops that are reaching
the end of their shelf life, the average unit cost of replacement is
£1,475.00 but the scope of this work does not include upgrading them to
solar power.

2. Could you also provide the unit cost of replacing an old dark metal bus
shelter, with the new red and light grey bus shelter. In addition, the
total cost of the project so far; and the expected cost at completion to
TfL.

Under the current contract, the average cost of replacing an old style
shelter is £5,718 including electrical connection. The shelter renewal
costs for the financial year to date are £1,054,000 and by end of the
financial year are forecast to be £1,770,000. These costs include new and
replacement shelters and variations in designs.

3. And finally, the cost of installing a countdown (bus eta system) to a
single bus shelter.

I can advise that the overall cost of a countdown sign including
installation and maintenance costs over a period of 10 years is £10,000.
However as this forms part of an overall contract we do not hold a
specific breakdown of individual costs.

4. If you're replacing stops and shelters when 'old', please state what
age is it necessary for them to be replaced?

They have to be 15 years or older.

If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable
to access it for some reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to
appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would
like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.

Yours sincerely
