Bus diversions in London
Dear Transport for London,
Can i please request a report on London Bus destination changes that will contain the following, from 2010 to today:
- Bus route (number, like 381 or C1)
- Original destination
- Amended destination
- Date+Time
- Number of passengers on the bus
- Stated reason for the bus destination change
- Any known traffic conditions affecting the redirection (for instance, road works).
If not all data is readily available or additional manipulations would be required please provide the raw data.
Additionally, i'd like to check what rights do passengers have to change the final destination back to the original. Diversions on some routes are absolutely intolerable for no obvious reason. In my experience, 2 out of 3 bus journeys end half way during 6-11PM on a specific route.
Thank you.
Yours faithfully,
Aghills

Thank you for your email received by Transport for London (TfL) on 5
November 2015 asking for bus destination changes.
Section 8(1) of the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) sets out the
requirements of a valid request for information and states that a request
must, amongst other things, “state the name of the applicant and an
address for correspondence.” As a full name has not been provided we are
unable to treat this as a valid request.
Could you please provide your full name in order for us to process your
request
Yours sincerely

Thank you for your email received by Transport for London (TfL) on 5
November 2015 asking for bus destination changes.
Your request will be processed in accordance with the requirements of the
Freedom of Information Act and TfL’s information access policy.
A response will be provided to you by 4 December. We publish a substantial
range of information on our website on subjects including operational
performance, contracts, expenditure, journey data, governance and our
financial performance. This includes data which is frequently asked for in
FOI requests or other public queries. Please check
[1]http://www.tfl.gov.uk/corporate/transpar... to see if this helps you.
In the meantime, if you would like to discuss this matter further, please
do not hesitate to contact me.

Dear Ms Karpichina
TfL Ref: FOI-1474-1516
Thank you for your email received by Transport for London (TfL) on 5
November 2015 asking for bus destination changes.
Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of
the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy.
I can confirm we do not hold the specific information you require as we
don’t record the blind display on the buses. We also don’t record the
reason for a specific curtailment beyond summary reasons such as
“mechanical”, or “traffic” and also don’t routinely record the number of
passengers on the bus by route/trip.
When measuring performance in this regard, we look at a statistic called
Lost Mileage, which is a percentage of the total mileage of the route the
operator ran. This statistic is explained and published on this page of
our website which I hope will be of interest to you:

If this is not the information you are looking for, or if you are unable
to access it for some reason, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to
appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would
like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.

Dear Lee Hill,
I've seen a similar request on this website regarding a different route. It did not contain the information about passenger numbers and instead of precise time had time brackets like [10-11AM] etc. The website you have provided does not have this information.
Unfortunately, i can't find this query to show it as an example.
Is it possible to get this data?
Bus no
Time bracket (hourly)
Original Destination
Actual destination
Number of buses satisfying above 4 criteria
From 2010 to today please.
Yours sincerely,
Aghills
Dear Ms Karpichina
TfL Ref: FOI-1474-1516
Thank you for your email received by us on 10 December 2015 asking for
information about bus performance.
Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of
the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act and our information access policy.
Unfortunately, from the description provided, we are unable to identify
the information you require.
To enable us to assist with your request, please provide a more detailed
description of the information you’re seeking together with any other
details you think might help us locate the information you require.
If you are referring to the bus arrival times and departure times report
(which would show when a bus stopped running and the summary reason e.g.
“traffic”), please note that we only hold the last two years worth of
data, and it is likely that a network wide report for the last two years
(i.e. all the information we hold in that respect) would be far too much
information to provide. To contextualise this, there is an average of
around 105,000 trips on the network every day (where a trip is a bus
moving from point A to point B). If each bus serves 20 bus stops on a
given trip, we’re talking about 2,100,000 data entries generated per day.
To locate, collate and retrieve this information across every bus route
for every day in the past two years is likely to considerably exceed the
cost limit.
The Freedom of Information Act allows you to request recorded information
held by Transport for London. There are limits on the time that we are
required to spend determining whether we hold the information you are
requesting and the time spent locating, retrieving and extracting it.
Therefore you should identify the information that you want as clearly and
concisely as you can, specifying the types of document that you are
looking for. You might also consider limiting your request to a particular
period of time, geographical area or specific departments of the
organisation.
Although your request can take the form of a question, rather than a
request for specific documents, we do not have to answer your question if
it would require the creation of new information or the provision of a
judgement, explanation, advice or opinion that was not already recorded at
the time of your request.
Please note that the 20 working day deadline for responding to your
request will depend on when we receive satisfactory additional
information to help clarify your request.
If we hear nothing further from you by 31 December your response will be
treated as a new request.
In the meantime, if you have any queries or would like to discuss your
request, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Yours sincerely
