I refer to your email dated 11 February 2023 and received on 13 February 2023, our reference is FOI 2023-0213.

I am pleased to give the information you requested and hope that it meets your requirements.

The below table shows the number of regular interments (that is full body burials). This does not include ashes interments as quite often ashes are buried many years after death and deaths are registered elsewhere (sometimes in other countries) – therefore the data would not be meaningful in any way.

In terms of deaths registered in Orkney where the deceased has gone on to be cremated, this is not recorded. The cremations are registered in other local authority areas (usually Inverness or Aberdeen), you may be able to receive this information if you contact these local authorities to determine the number of cremations carried out where the death was registered in Orkney.
